A few months ago Alex told me not to plan anything for September 11-13. I had a few guesses as to where we would be going, but I told him I didn't want to know a thing about it. For those of you who know me well, I have a tendency of over-planning at an annoying level, and since this was his thing I didn't want to step on any of his toes. As it turns out, our surprise getaway ended up being a weekend in Portland, Maine...a city that none of the Light Trio had ever ventured to before. Here is a little re-cap of our trip.
We had fun just walking around, finding different places to eat and observing city-life of the locals:

| our expert map reader |
| Hunter feel asleep on my shoulder for the first time in 2 years..the shots he had earlier in the day left him slightly feverish and tired. |
| Friday night dinner at White Cap Grill |
| He was even too tired for dinner.... |
| Sunset view from our room...it was an early night since Bubs was a little under the weather. |
| Luckily he woke up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed so we were able to stay (we had contemplated coming home early if Hunter was still sickish when we woke up) |
| A nice morning walk to find a breakfast place |
| Saturday morning breakfast at Becky's |
Maine Wildlife Park - a nature sanctuary that rehabilitates animals that become injured or sick. It was very neatly up-kept....from the nature trails you could traverse to the bathroom stalls. The park was bigger than we expected, especially for the low-cost to get in.
| Unfortunately during the walk through this park the fever came back....but luckily a dose of Motrin and nap in the car ride wiped it right out of him....crisis diverted again!!! |
Two Points Light - a cute park in Cape Elizabeth. This was actually my favorite part of the trip. Not only is it a beautiful area, but there are several fun coastal trails to walk around, plus some rough terrain exploration. It was hard for me to let go of the figurative parental rope and let Hunter scale over the bed of rocks without my holding his hand every step of the way (especially when the course was on what I would call the more extreme side). But he did great (Alex was on one side and I was on the other so if he did slip at all he would have been easily caught) and thought it was so cool that he was big enough to be able to do it on his own.
| Hunter asked me to take this picture because the fishy had a smiley face and was just "sooo cute) |
| Hunter decided he wanted to try out his photography skills...so he did a mini-photo shoot of Alex and I |
| Saturday dinner at Old Port Tavern |
| Saturday ice cream at Beal's Old Fashioned Ice Cream |
| Sunday Breakfast at C2 |
| For whatever reason people put their names on locks and leave them on this fence. I have no idea why, but we figured might as well leave our mark. So Alex etched "Light" into a lock we bought at the local CVS and our legacy is officially left in Portland. |
To sum up, it was a great little get-away...and I think Alex should plan surprise weekends like this for us more often!!!
